Should mobiles be allowed in class?

This is a 'Picture-based discussion&' topic. I put them in pairs and give them time to look at the sheet and make notes. One has to argue for the proposal and the other against. Great for starters in English or to develop more fully in PHSE.

Prefixes and suffixes

The students have to find the prefix or suffix which will go with each of 4 words. There are 32 sets of words. They can then discuss whether they have created antonyms or turned adjectives into proper nouns etc... A few slides at a time for starter activities...

The Ghost at the Crossroads

Urban legend, adapted from the internet. The story is on the first slide, then there are various activities: visuals for Splat, or Q &A session; true or false/put the story in sequential order/guidelines for a hot seat and ideas on how to teach the story. My aim is to get the students to produce a recount.

There are six shopping lists. What can students deduce about the people's personalities? On page 2, there are some prompts and a gap fill activity as differentiation.

Word level activity. Words beginning with ...

A series of worksheets: Words beginning with each letter of the alphabet. The clue is given and the students work out what the word is. I'll upload these as I complete them. To extend this, the students can choose any noun and mind map it with &'where do you see it? What is it made of? Draw it. Design a symbol for it etc...\nMore to come!

This is a brain gym type activity. The students are given a description and they must guess the word, from the clue. There are 4 letters, each with 8 clues per slide. The first section is easy and the second section, going through the alphabet again, has harder clues. My students love these and they love to make their own versions. This can be done as a whole class activity, as pair work, or as a competition, with time limits. Previously, I uploaded worksheets, with the letters A and B. They were popular, so now I have completed the set.

Practice writing full sentences with 'there is&' and &';there are' and counting. They are going to want to colour this picture in! I have permission to use it from the artist, Melanie Hope Greenberg. A bit of fun!
The E test

The E test

(0)
A reading passage with true or false exercise and the students are asked to list all the words used instead of 'said.' If you use this worksheet you might like to do the E test with your class first. What it is is explained on the ws and there is a link to an article about it. (It's a personality test).

King Salvo and the Wise Witch

A short story on a ppt, (32 slides) with some images and activities. This ppt accompanies my short story of the same title. The wise witch has cast a spell on King Salvo, but ultimately, will it help him to become a better king? A Midas-esque story!

Daily Routine: Robert's Day

This is a series of pictures and comments about a boy's day to reinforce the present simple - what he normally/usually/sometimes does etc.. There is reading, sequencing, match up (sentences and pictures), true or false and a gap fill activity. Thanks to my colleague Sophia in Ukraine for the template. I&'ve done this for my EAL class, but it may suit younger pupils.

This is to get the students using higher level language and thinking skills. They have to use conditionals with compound tenses (would have done/might have done) etc to be able to debate/discuss different possible outcomes.

Androcles and the Lion

A play based on Aesop's fable. There are six narrators, besides the main parts, which can easily be adapted to fewer or more. I&'ve tried to make it fun and upbeat. This version is based on a Youtube clip and I&';ve included the link. There is no talking in the video, so it's great for teaching EAL kids.

I ask my students to comment on each picture and make inferences. Then they have to prepare a 5 minute talk on whether they are for or against the death penalty and why. It's still a useful debate and can be linked to &'Of Mice and Men&'; and many other works they study.
